01 — The person the briefing is about
Use the name as given at birth or as legally held now, whichever the briefing should be about. If both
matter, put the second in the notes at the end and we will trace both.
Why middle names matter. They are usually the oldest thing in a name. A middle name is where
families store a mother’s maiden surname, a grandfather’s given name, or a surname that otherwise left
the record entirely — the Kellie in one briefing was a paternal grandmother’s maiden name, and it was
the only route to an Irish Ó Ceallaigh line. They also change the numerology
outright: dropping one middle name shifts the Expression, Soul Urge, Personality and Chaldean totals,
because those are sums over letters.
02 — Birth date, time and place
This is the input to the ephemeris. Date and city alone give a usable chart; the minute is what makes
the houses and the angles real.
Why the minute matters. The Ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes, so a
fifteen-minute error moves it about four degrees and can push it into the next sign. The house cusps
move with it, which is what decides whether the Sun is read in the twelfth house or the eleventh. In
one briefing the Sun sat at 18°17′ Libra in the twelfth house at 09:26 — at 09:56 it would have been
the eleventh, and the interpretation section would read differently. Aspect orbs, by contrast, are
almost unaffected: Sun square Uranus at an orb of 0.03° stays 0.03° all day.
Where the time usually is. The long-form (not abstract) birth certificate; a baby book or
hospital bracelet card; the newspaper birth announcement for the county; a parent’s memory, which
is worth recording as “about” — we will note it as approximate rather than treat it as exact. If a
range is all you have, write it in the notes at the end and we will show the Ascendant’s travel
across that range instead of pretending to a single minute.
03 — Parents and grandparents
Full names, including middles and maiden surnames, plus any birthplace you know even loosely. Six
names and two counties is enough to start; “Ohio, somewhere” is more useful than a blank. Leave what
you do not know empty — a guess entered as fact costs a researcher hours.
Grandparents — as many as you have
Any grandparent birthplaces, counties or states you know
Counties are the unit that matters. Vital records, marriage licences and probate files are held
at county level in most of the United States, so a county name is often the difference between a
search and a fishing trip.
What we do with names that go nowhere. Some will. When a name cannot be substantiated it goes
into the research-gaps section with the variants already eliminated and the next record set named —
the 1950 census, a state death index, county marriage licences, land patents. That section is a
deliverable, not an excuse, and a briefing may honestly end a line with “goes cold, 1888”.
04 — What level of work
The computed sections are identical at every price. What changes is whether a person searches the
archives for the names above, and whether any of it gets printed and bound.
